Summer Internship: Xean Chew

“Throughout my internship, Adam’s expertise, dedication, and genuine commitment to nurturing young talent fostered an environment where I felt encouraged and supported to explore new areas of law.”

During my summer internship at AdamBenedict, an expanding and dynamic firm, I had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of tasks that enabled me to develop a diverse skill set and gain valuable insight into the legal field. Working closely with Adam Creasey, the Managing Director, as my mentor, was instrumental in shaping my legal thinking and honing my management skills within the profession.

One of my primary responsibilities revolved around drafting letters and conducting legal research. A notable case involved drafting a letter of instruction to a medical expert, ensuring compliance with CPR39.3 and referring to relevant cases such as Levy v Ellis-Carr [2012] EWHC 63(Ch) and the Pereira test (Bank of Scotland v Pereira & Pain & Pain [2011] EWCA Civ 241).

This project not only sharpened my drafting skills but also deepened my understanding of the intricacies involved in medical reporting with legal proceedings. It highlighted the importance of precision and attention to detail when communicating with experts in the field.

Furthermore, I had the privilege of contributing to AdamBenedict’s website and blog by writing a post on the implications of failing to appear in court due to illness, with a particular focus on CPR 39.3. This experience allowed me to showcase my writing skills while providing information to readers on a significant legal matter. It also afforded me the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of the topic, explore different perspectives, and present a well-researched and informative piece. It was rewarding to know that my work contributed to the firm’s online presence and provided useful resources for those seeking legal guidance on the subject.

Given my keen interest in insolvency, corporate restructuring, and debt recovery, the firm took note of my preferences and involved me in relevant cases. I assisted in creating debt recovery letters and templates to enhance efficiency. This work required analysing facts, strategizing with the team, and ensuring that the templates contained tactful and persuasive information and instructions for effective debt recovery procedures. It was a valuable learning experience, allowing me to apply my knowledge to practical scenarios and witness first-hand the importance of clear communication and strategic thinking in debt recovery matters.

Throughout my internship, Adam’s expertise, dedication, and genuine commitment to nurturing young talent fostered an environment where I felt encouraged and supported to explore new areas of law. He provided valuable guidance and insights, helping me navigate complex legal issues and encouraging me to challenge myself to expand my skills and knowledge.

Looking back on my internship experience, I am incredibly honoured and grateful for the opportunities I had and hope to continue my professional growth with AdamBenedict in the future. This experience not only enriched my understanding of the legal profession but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of mentorship and continuous learning in shaping a successful legal career.
