Internship Experience with Amar Lally
An account from our intern Amar Lally on his time at Adam Benedict.
My time at Adam Benedict has been invaluable. It provided hands-on exposure to the legal profession in a way that theory alone cannot achieve. From the outset, I was entrusted with real responsibility. This allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the firm’s litigation work and develop practical skills essential for a law career.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at the firm was the immediate trust placed in me to handle key legal tasks. I compiled court bundles, ensured court dates were adequately communicated to solicitors and verified that the correct documents reached the court on time. These tasks reinforced the importance of precision in litigation. Every detail matters. A misplaced document or an overlooked deadline can have serious consequences.
I was fortunate to witness litigation in action over a leasehold dispute. Observing legal arguments unfold in real time deepened my understanding of contract law and civil procedure. Strategy plays a pivotal role. It is not simply about legal principles but how they are applied in a courtroom setting to get the best possible outcome for the client. The teamwork between barristers, clients and solicitors was not something I had seen much of before; it left me intrigued to learn more. Thus, this experience reaffirmed my interest in litigation and strengthened my resolve to pursue this field further.
Throughout my time at the firm, I was pushed beyond my comfort zone. One key challenge was attending a court case in Canterbury, where I was tasked with taking detailed notes. The experience sharpened my ability to swiftly distil complex legal arguments. Litigation moves fast. A solicitor must listen, analyse and record key statements in real-time. With some useful tips from Adam, Grace and Harrison - this experience greatly improved my analytical thinking and note-taking skills. Both of which are essential in legal practice.
Beyond legal work, I found the firm’s entrepreneurial spirit genuinely inspiring. As a growing practice, it demonstrated a strong commitment to client service while maintaining a personal touch. The dedication of the team was evident. They ensured that clients’ legal needs were met with both technical expertise and genuine care. Additionally, the opportunity to learn from Adam Creasey and Ben Cressey about their early career experiences and the firm’s formation provided a rare insight into the business side of legal practice. I was told how they distinguished themselves from their peers and how their experiences have moulded their practice. Gaining this knowledge will be invaluable as I progress in my career.
The transition from theory to practice is crucial. Understanding the law is one thing. Applying it effectively is another. Adam Benedict bridged this knowledge by having me analyse relevant areas of law such as beneficial ownership in constructive trusts, procedural fairness in constructive dismissal cases, the application of the new Renters Rights Act and issues under the Landlord & Tenant Act. This allowed me to apply my academic knowledge to real legal problems, which has compounded my legal knowledge.
My time at Adam Benedict has confirmed my ambition to pursue a career in litigation. I am deeply grateful to the entire team for their mentorship and support. The experience has given me skills, knowledge and, perhaps most importantly, the confidence that will shape my future in law.
